2) the activity of our forum has diminished significantly... </3

hi
December 4th 2015, 11:59 PM

The board is now a survival horror game.

No one really noticed it at first. But slowly, the activity on the board was diminishing. Once-active posters were no longer posting. Did anyone question it? Was it not, after all, natural for people to come and go, move onto other things?

Oh, the lost were sometimes mentioned in passing. I wonder what that old codger, SabreTrout, is up to these days. Or his arch-nemesis, Jamie the Name-Crafter. But did anyone really pursue their disappearance?

As more and more people vanished, you could feel something terrible loom over the board, oppressive but utterly intangible. Carrie, the beaver from Canada. MsDink, the friendly neighborhood grandmother with a sinister past. Skull, the 9000-post wondergun.

People made excuses. Even as posts on the board trickled down to less than one per day, they denied any malevolent presence. Oh, Carrie must have been eaten by a polar bear. MsDink's probably dead from old age. And Skull's too busy watching My Little Pony to visit the board anymore.

But what about Sparrowhawk! MadStalker! redink1 himself!

It's natural, they said. It's a wonder we've been around as long as we have. Meh, they said.

What would happen next? Would you wake up one day, log onto the board, and find yourself the only one left alive? What is this terrible lethargy, gripping the minds of the board's once vigorous people...?

No one could see the sinister something that was enveloping the world of the board, even as they themselves disappeared... No one, except YOU!

Are you a bad enough dude to solve the curse of the board, before it catches up and consumes you too?

Then there are those that do get wrapped up in other things, like performing in a Elvis act, and don't really vanish but eventually wander back to the fold ... even if only to wave on the way through and pause for a sip of duck soup.

Btw, your name too looks familiar and you mentioned a few names I remember. Carrie is from Canada too, eh?

Also, thanks, but I'll pass. There are things wrong with every country, but there is an exceptional amount of things wrong with the USA. It's fun to watch, but I would certainly not want to be a part of it. Because if I would be, I'd feel responsible to try and fix things (hint), and I think doing other things makes me a lot happier.

Which is why you'd vote for Bernie right? I sure hope he becomes president. I think honestly think he'll fix a lot of our shit and probably end up making the whole world a better place. Though, if Trump becomes president I think I'll cry myself to sleep for the next four years. Now I'm sad.

Yes. But unfortunately, I think that even if he would win (which is now a lot more likely than it seemed a few months ago, but still very unlikely), he probably can't get anything done. Because he needs others and they are all bought off. He's talking about a political revolution, but it doesn't sound like he has an actual plan for how to get a constitutional amendment to overturn citizens united, for example. And he needs one, because roughly 100% of congress will vote against anything he proposes in that regard. But anyone else is certainly going to cause more trouble than he would.

if Trump becomes president

Trump says whatever he needs to say to be popular. He doesn't care if he changes position all the time. As long as it gets him votes, he says it. If he would become the republican nominee, I'm certain he will flip around on almost every issue, so he is more aligned with the democratic leaning voters. Against Hillary I'd say he has a decent chance of winning.

But all that also means something else: all the horrible things he's saying now are zero prediction for what he will do as president. My guess is he'd just make laws that make him richer. In other words, he'd do the same as everyone else (except Bernie): give more money to the rich. He'd just do it for a different reason (selfishness as opposed to being paid for it).

But it's all speculation. In the end, Trump is a wild card; I don't think anyone can really predict what he would do. Interesting for a spectator like me, but I wouldn't take the risk with the country (and the world).

I've heard Bernie's got some cool ideas and that they're consistent and therefore honest and not just bullshit that's said to please whoever like Obama does, but our president has no power. They just hold a puppet position/mascot kinda thing.

The real ones in power are corporations. If they want something, they buy it. Then a vote is held to make it seem like we can fight back, but we pretty much can't.

Don't vote, kids. No, but seriously, don't vote. Our votes are 100% meaningless. Use the gas money to go do something helpful.

This is true.

Don't vote

But that does not help at all. Sure, everyone except Bernie and Trump are bought off. But even with the system so broken, voting is still important. Suppose you can choose between Hillary Clinton and Marco Rubio. They will both give lots of money to the banks and the oil companies. But Rubio will start a war with Iran and destroy all that is good, and Hillary will probably not do as much damage. Both choices are bad, but one is certainly worse than the other. Not voting doesn't help.

Use the gas money to go do something helpful.

That's a good plan, but do you have suggestions? As I wrote before, I do. If you care about your country, fighting for your democracy is well worth your time. But even if you don't, never stop voting. The lesser of two evils is still less evil, and that does matter.

Why wouldn't Bernie and Trump be bought off? As a monolithic evil company, wouldn't you want to pull the strings of a country's "leader" and offer them money to do exactly what you want? They may not really have power, but they do speak for the country as a whole when speaking with other countries.

TPP wouldn't be possible without the control of world leaders after all. In the famous words of OBama: "There's nothing secret about the TPP".

That's a good plan, but do you have suggestions?
Let's see, help the homeless, donate to actual good causes, random public services, stop evil geniuses from blowing up the moon. Stuff like that. Why wouldn't Bernie and Trump be bought off?

Bernie because he's a good man, and he doesn't accept money from big companies. In fact, recently a pharmaceutical company paid him the maximum allowed amount (which is low, because he doesn't have a super PAC) and asked for a meeting with him. Bernie refused the meeting and donated the money to a good cause. It's not that they don't want to buy him off. It's that he doesn't accept the money.

Trump is so rich he doesn't need the money. I think he's accepting money from some people, but they know and he knows that he doesn't need them. So he can just do whatever he wants anyway. Now if he wants good things, that may be very good. But nobody knows what he really thinks, and I wouldn't take the risk.

Let's see, help the homeless, donate to actual good causes, random public services, stop evil geniuses from blowing up the moon. Stuff like that.

These are all good things, and I wouldn't want to stop you from doing them. However, everything is managed by politics. If the political system is broken, it doesn't help much if regular people try to clean up the mess. For example, helping the homeless. I heard that there are people who make food for them. That's great, and those are awesome people. But they shouldn't need to spend their time on that. Those people are homeless because politicians organized society in a certain way. The reason they did this is that it makes them and their rich friends slightly richer.

In short: you must fix the source of the problem (legalized corruption in politics) before worrying about everything caused by it (homelessness, endless wars, income inequality, obesity, climate change, health care costs, ...)

I hope to duck he appeared on camera and said exactly what company tried to buy him. That's the kind of leaders we need - ones who aren't afraid expose shitty entities such as pharmaceutical ones. Especially pharma. Seriously, duck them all.

What I've learned from politicians and corporations is that they can never have enough money. Maybe Trump isn't like that, but I dunno.

Yes, the very same will do everything they can to undo such things, but fixing absolute corporatism and greed that we have over here is way out of my league. Not enough people are aware of it and I'm a horrible leader. I can't even convince someone that Comcast is trying to ruin the internet and that we should probably downgrade. It's always been like that - I say something, nobody believes me, then after all the damage has been done, suddenly "Oh, you were right. Sorry." So duck that, you can believe donations. I'll just help people directly while someone else fixes the country.

True. And Trump most definitely is like that, too. But he doesn't need it for his campaign. And if he would win, he can change the laws to give himself more money. Which is exactly what I expect him to do.

fixing absolute corporatism and greed that we have over here is way out of my league.
You don't have to do it alone. Wolf PAC can use all the help they can get, and I'm sure they're more than happy to explain you what you can do to help.

I'm a horrible leader
Don't let that stop you. Cenk Uygur is leading them and he's doing fine. But he does need people on his team.

trump has bankrupted himself twice isnt it
Four times I believe. But it wasn't because he was a bad businessman. He did it on purpose, because it was good for his personal finances. Which is worse.

u wanna let him in charge of a country's finances HELL NO
Indeed. He would probably say "if we shutdown the government and don't pay welfare for half a year, we'll make more money; let's do that" or something like that.

lol america will be laffing stock of the world
If that was all, I'd be in favor of it. The problem is a joke like that costs a lot of regular Americans a lot of happiness (and money).

Yep, I'm afraid I'm too busy watching pastel-coloured horses shooting laser beams to pay much attention to Dink. And it's more fun to be part of a community that has other active people in it, and where your fan-work actually has a chance of being seen by someone.

But while that is kinda true... on a more serious note, Tim's death kinda made it hard to visit this site for a bit. Then there were two family deaths for me this past summer which sucked. And overall, stuff in general has not been going great for me this year which has rather burned me out and depressed me. I do still wanna make something for Dink, but the activity here has been so slow lately it seems pointless. At the very least, I wouldn't mind doing a project with some of the Dinkers I'm more familiar with, even if it's not Dink-related. Just for the sake of not losing contact with them.

At the same time, under Harper's time at the helm ... we didn't have a Lehman Brothers event to cope with. Easy, the Canadian banking system is and was heavily regulated against the shenanigans that were pulled by American Banks. I'm sure if Conservative party could get away with getting rid of that regulation and oversight, they would (and might have in the later years of their majority; I don't know, I don't follow Canadian politics as much as I used to). We *used* to have stuff that prevented that, but a lot of that was done away with in the name of "freedom" from the Reagan era on to basically Obama, where we added just a *few* back in, though still not enough to prevent it from happening again here (which it will).

There was a time in Canada where our elected officials seemed to be required to vote according to what their constituents demanded, and only stuck to the party lines in specific things, such as budget issues, which could lead to a vote of noon-confidence in the House of Commons. We went through a long series of Minority Governments and they have gotten used to always voting according party mandate, regardless of what we the people demand.

Having said that, we Canadians are also at the mercy of the Corporations. While I admit that presently most of them occupy just a few industries; Oil, Pharmaceuticals, Insurance, and Financial, I think we have to look beyond the public face of the corporations, to see the real problem. Ultimately, there are but a few individuals that either own the controlling interest in the most influential companies or they control the banks that have loaned them the money they operate with on a day to day bases.

The few rich people we actually hear about are certainly richer than all of us combined, and do wield minor influence over some things, it is the few people that reduce even Warren Buffet to a mere pauper, in comparison.

Imagine, the last powerball jackpot was worth more than 1 billion dollars. This is certainly more money than I will ever see in my lifetime, but it is significantly less than Kraft alone has invested in controlling several competing brands, in the food industry.

I agree largely with George Carlin's thought on Government, it is an illusion to make us believe we have a choice.

To what makes a man pure.... tis only concept of the mind, for nothing changes except for what we perceive our nature is for it. Morality is just something that was made to give hope and allow control and reasons for problems. Only those philosophical enough, know that the ends of morality like purity to corruption and good to evil are nothing, but a way of dooming ourselves. The philosophical are also going to be in jail for committing crimes against society so I shall go back to the simple side for now, but there has yet to be anything about Pure EVIL.
