Dink with Shovel

The "Dink with Shovel" graphics pack contains images with dink holding a shovel - as expected. It's made by replacing the sword with a graphic of a shovel on every frame. It's something that isn't very hard to do; but it takes a huge amount time and is really, really boring. Therefore it's great that someone else made the job for you, especially if you are lazy, like me.

So far, so good; but this file is not perfect. First of all, there are no script for the shovel! Scripting a shovel isn't very easy to do, and it would be good for at least the newcomers to have some kind of guide. I've done my own script for it which can be found in the my mod "Agatha Smallwood's Will", it's named "item-sw1". It's not commented and very messy, but maybe I'll make a new someday with a guide and proper commenting so it's easy to follow.

The graphics themselves also have flaws.The shovel's shadow still have the shape of a sword, it looks ugly and unfinished. Another problem that also is caused by the fact that the shovel are based on the sword is that there are no digging graphics. This leaves the developer with a choice between fading down the screen while the digging is done and making your own graphics for it.

One thing that wouldn't have been to hard for the owner of this file to do before starting with the image replacement would have been to make the graphics for the shovel look better. To tell the truth I think this one is terrible. The handle have a very light yellow colour, almost white, I think a dark brown would have made this a much better file.

Overall:

This file isn't very good looking, and most of us could make a better one...but nobody will as we are to lazy. This file doesn't deserve the score I give it by being well made but because of being made.

This file contains graphics of Dink standing and walking with a shovel in hand, and swinging it like a sword. Actually it's just that, the original sword graphics with a shovel replacing the sword: Many other files on this website use the same method, however, for a shovel, you'd except digging graphics, as well as an inventory picture and a test DMOD that would let you see how the shovel works in real game. None of this is included, instead, you get several unnecessary Thumbs.db files. These are just files that Windows generates to display thumbnails faster, and they should have been deleted before releasing the graphics.

As for the shovel itself, it looks fine. It's clear that the graphics are just pasted on the sword with little aid of advanced graphic editing programs, but this is cool and didn't really bother me at all. What is not cool is that the shadows of the graphics haven't been altered. Although Dink is holding a shovel, the shadow still looks like he's holding a sword. The handle of the shovel is also so bright that it almost looks like it's glowing with an inner light. Unless you want to have a Light Shovel of some sort, a darker brownish alternative would have been nice. =)

In the end though, I absolutely love this file. The author's lack of experience shows but the most important part, the graphics, look okay and anything besides that is just wishing the cake had more cream on it. The concept is awesome and really suits Dink, whom I have somewhat of a hard time imagining as a finesse fighter with a finely balanced longsword or Dinkorro's rapier. The shovel fits him like a red armband and beheading ducks with this thing should be great fun.

-Dink holds a shovel in one hand. Shouldn't he hold in two?
-There should be a animation where Dink digs(Unless you're a Postal 2 fan wher you run with shovel and hit instead of digging)
But anyway nice graphic.
