One way to kill the point whores...
Of course, the easiest way to kill the point whores is to cancel the ranking system. However the ranking system still has some positive function, and i don't think killing it is good for DN.

So here is my proposal: change the magic formula.

First, do not use average review scores to calculate, instead, use a modified average review score (MARS) -- Average Review score minus 4

So, the range of MARS = -4.0 to +5.9 (Default: 1.0)

The Magic Formula used for the Overall Rankings:

(MARS = Modified Average Review Score, if no review, defaults to 1.0)

D-Mod Unfinished = Modified Average Review Score * 5

Demo = ARS*6

Weird = ARS*8

Romp = ARS*8

Quest = ARS*14

Epic = ARS*20

Dev Source = ARS*1

Tutorial = ARS*5

Utility = ARS*6

File = ARS*3

Misc Add-On = ARS*3

Cheat = ARS*3

Frontend = ARS*5

File = ARS*3

Translation = ARS*5

Most of the multiplicants are twice as large as the previous ones. I adjusted some of them to give more possible points for quest and epic dmods. the points for submitted reviews stay the same.

How this new formula kill point whores? Easy. If people release some bad files, although DN staffs still accept it, it will most likely get a bad average review score. So if you release a file which gets less than 4.0 ARS, that file will decrease your total points! Although the author might be able to raise the ARS by submitting a praising review, if the file is really bad, the majority review scores would still be bad enough to affect you points.

This way, people might think twice before releasing useless files or bad dmods. You cannot get more points by releasing garbage files. ;)

Re: One way to kill the point whores...
I have zero points and I don't care :P

That's not what I worth after barely 2 years of Dinking.

Huhmm.. What about setting 5.0 as maximum and -5.0 as minimum score for reviews, and don't draw anything from the score when calculating the ARS? hmmmm... :)
Re: One way to kill the point whores...
Yes... I think this is a step in the right direction. I've just realised if I release all the new graphics, and tiles as individual development files each with ARS of 1 then that's more than an epic's ARS of 8. I'd get more points for individual releases than the releasing the whole DMOD?

Think of that... we could all just release development files, no DMODs - think what would happen then.

Test of Mimifish's Magic Formula.

Not that many changes.  Jveenhof and WC drop a couple positions, Christian goes up a few, and the average drops 5 points.

You are fast. ;)

But in fact Christiaan dropped the most. The only obvious high riser is Tyrsis. One single great epic file (ARS > 9.0) can give you more than 100 points alone!

If you do want to use this kind of system, I would suggest you to think the multiple numbers more so that it can reflect the value of a file more accurate. The points system I suggested earlier is just a quick copy of yours with a few small change from top of my head in the midnight before I went to bed. :p It might be unbalanced...

Re: Test Online
Yeah, it does need a little balancing, but good so far.

Re: One way to kill the point whores...
I guess that shouldn't affect me too much therefore I do what I do best which is reviewing. :) Wait, I haven't been reviewing for over 20 days now. I guess that is a DN record for me. :)

As for the overall rankings, The developmental files and misc files should have a fixed value like the old points system. If the average review score is less than a 5 just subtract .5 points. If it is greater than 5 add .5 points. So if a developmental file is worth 2 fixed points then if it gets a 4 for average review score, then you get only 1.5. That would only work if it was an even number or maybe use round the average score by using the integer function so if the review score was 6.9 it would be only 6. Since it is a 6 you add .5 from the neutral point which is 5. I know you may be confused, but I'm trying my best to explain. I don't know if it works or not, but hey at least I tried. :)

If .5 is a low number then try 1. Translations should be worth the most for developmental files therefore being the most difficult to make.

As for the points in reviews don't lower it or increase it. It's fine the way it is. :)

The multipliers for Dmods is fine. The developmental and MISC is questionable. That method should somewhat stop point whoring.

so u are saying if we dont make dmod are a file or tile ect. we cant get a rating? comeing here for 2 years, telling friends , all the downloads and helping people on the board with quetions.Dont mean  anything. So a few of u are going to take  credit for it all. with out players, there would be no dink. credit to all DINKER,S!Make a raing for us this rating different from the ones that make our dmods to play (THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR DMODS)

;)
Re: One way to kill the point whores...
I agree, maybe if we lower the misc and development scoring, that might work. but basically, make d-mods worth the most, and only allow the good d-mod (not baywatch d-mods) onto the database.

Sounds good in theory, I'll try to get a test up soon.

But it doesn't seem like it would do much to combat point whores.  Only 31-Dec-2001&Review=<4&view_records=View+Records&sb=7&so=ascend">5 possible 'point whore' files have been released which score under 4.0.

And looking at the files listed in that link a BIT more closely, only 3 are possible point whore files.  Amehola was originally released before the points system, and Glandor wasn't released for some quick points... er, well, maybe... you never know.  So only 4 possible...
Re: One way to kill the point whores...
Hey punk, remember my old dink site when we had the old dink chat? I had that damn chat client up then too, I just added it the DN when the MIRC chat resurfaced, point whore my butt. What about that FIat diary you released? :)

Calm down man. ;) redink1 said 5 possible point whores, not 8. 3 of the 8 files that were shown on the link do not have any review, and therefore the review score was thought to be 0.
