Your Thoughts Requested: FIAT v1.00 Enemies
There has been some criticism of the elemental monsters from FIAT v0.99.  I thought they were ok... well, at least better than the previous two iterations of them.  But some of you hated them.



So, I made a fourth iteration for v1.00.  And because I have a terrible eye for graphics, tell me which is better.  v1.00 graphics on the left, v0.99 graphics on the right.

I like all the fire and earth ones, when I first saw the earth elementals, I thought they were ice or something. I'm not too sure about the air, the old ones make sense since they're see through and have this air feeling but isn't that appeasing; the new ones look nice, maybe you should make those transparent too...



I like the new water graphics better than the old ones and my suggestion is you could make the different shades of water move as to look like waves.

Left = v1.00, but transparent

I like the top left air the best actually...the half trasparent ones i thought were just weird..i dunno..ghosts or something..



But i think all the ones on the left are an improvement, especialy fire.

OK, here is my thought:



1. None of the air ones (new or old) are very good. If I do need to pick one from them, I would still choose the old one.

2. I like earth pillbug and water pillbug very much. However, the other two monsters of these 2 types (knight and bonca) are not as good. They are too dark. For water, I would like to see some degree of transparacy so that you got the feeling of water.

3. On the other hand, fire bonca and fire knight are better than fire pillbug.

4. Are you going to have new graphics for void monsters as well?



In fact, to certain degree, I agree with Kyle's opinions, although I think the new air monsters are weird. If you do have time to redraw the elemental monsters, I would think it will be better if you add something on top of the original monsters. For example, you put some fog-like effect around the air monsters, some flame around the fire monsters, and some water trailing around the mosters' shadow. As for earth ones, I do not have any good idea right now. Maybe some dust or mud falling off the monster all the time? ;)



But it is going to take a lot of time to do that, and probably most of the time the add-on might make the graphics even worse. That's my opinion anyway. ;)

1) I half-way agree... I'll try some more things out.

2) Ergh.  Well, the good news I worked on this a little bit earlier today (before reading this post, actually). The earth monsters are a (little) bit brighter, and now look more rockish too.  I didn't brighten up the water monsters, but they might look more waterish, I'm not sure, I'm killing the dink.ini file and all monster scripts and weapons scripts, so I can't test them in the game for a while.

4) Right now, they're completely black... no red outlines or some such nonsense like with v0.99.  I still have some things I want to test, so that'll probably change.

5) Kyle is wrong :p.  Well, not that wrong... but all of the new monsters are textured using Photoshop 6 (not DImage... DImage would take years!), even if they are a bit dark... I really dislike the screening technique I used for v0.99.



But are you mad?  I suck at graphics... I couldn't draw water coming off the water monsters and such!  But... that does give me an idea.  heh.



And I just got done programming a shadow killa, which should improve the quality of the graphics a bit.  See, right now I just use Photoshop 6 batch processing to do all of these elemental themes, and to preserve the shadows I just select all black pixels on the screen.  But that also leaves ugly black splotches on the sprites themselves, which were more evident with the v0.99 sprites than the v1.00 ones.  Shadow-Killa temporarily removes only the shadows, not all black pixels.  Anyway, it should give me more leeway in what I can do, so they will all probably change...



Oh, and unlike FIAT v0.99, where there weren't Void Dragons or Regular Dragons and such, all enemies will be represented by their respective elements.

I guess I'm about the only one who thinks the new ones are worse, EXCEPT for the air ones. It seems you took the old DImage utility and used that, or simply used some color layer feature of some graphics programme (except for air of course). I may be wrong, but that's the way I feel. The "new" graphics don't feel so new because of this.

Most definatelty Version 1.00! I didn't much like the ones in the first version.

Go with the new ones. They have the edge over the others. The fire is the best. Earth needs something else to help differeniate it. Water isn't bad... Air is very hard. Maybe Paul's suggestion is best.

In my opinion, which is usually not the same as other Dinkers' ;), the only great improvement is the fire elemental monsters. I don't like the new air ones. I can't pick which one is better for the earth and water ones though.

I like the new ones better except for Air. I think the semi-transparency should stay.

Sorry. Perhaps what would look good for air, is the old graphics only grayscale.

the newer ones have a more realistic look to them, but either one is ok

I liked them the way they were... but I also like the new ones. Must have no eye for graphics too, I guess... The first 2 of the new ones look really cool, but if I HAD to make a choice, I would go for the old ones.

Eye wise, at least for me, the ones on the left stood out better.  But I didn't complain about the old ones either, so as long as I can still see the enemie, I am not complaining. >^--^<
