AGAE:  starting off help

I have gotten the special sword from Hank and burned down the trees and stuff but now I'm stuck.  The people I talk to speak of "light."  I go back to my house and the stepmother lady kills me.  My question is...do I need to beat her to move on or is there something I am missing?  Thanks for any help.

Have you asked the lady about the water?  Gotten the dead and live water?  examined her fireplace?  Used a tree pass?  turned money into points?  have a map?  Have a page for the spell book?  Also, you must kill the stepmother, she is evil and has things you need.
