As I remember, it just took a lot of moving around and dodging his axe. It also helps to have some potion bottles - I suggest 5. It helped me to get just slightly below him and allow him to come at me. Just as he got into sword range, I would take a swipe at him AS I MOVED DOWN & AWAY from him. This kept me from getting hit a lot. It took a while, but he eventually died. One more thing, after you beat him, you'll get the option to instill your sword. Only do this after you've bought another sword. Instilling it only works against non-air creatures. Hitting an air-pillbug makes it stronger - doesn't hurt it a bit. You'll need a regular sword to keep killing them until you can instill a sword with another element (earth or something). Instilling with earth is VERY effective on water creatures - for future play. :) Hope this helps! :p
