Fiat - Talking Tree in Rai

Am I just inept, because I can't seem to chop down that tree in Rai to get back in to the air dungeon - hit it at least 75 times w/ sword but no luck. Does it make a difference that I burned it up with the power fist before downloading the latest patch? I'd appreciate any help getting past this point.

You can explode out of the fireplace chimney as many times as you want to get over, trouble is, after killing the air knight you can't get back - unless you chop down the tree. It seems to work best with a normal sword.

Thank you! I had it backwards - thought the tree was for getting back in, not out! Pretty dumb...
