axe in rife...i've read the others

ok, i have been all over rife, talked to that dude after the minion "killed me", gotten the axe lore, killed every single creature on the island, but i have not found an axe anywhere.  is it's appearance contingent on something else?  if so, what is it i have to do?

Try pushing beds in some of the houses.  Can't remember which house, but there only 5 or so houses.  One bed moves to reveal a stairway.
