got the earth sword and the whistle, found the machine but cant move the head in front of the entrance it to get to machine. and what is twang and where is it?

Rai is the land of trees as you figured out.  If you have a bow, just walk around a bit in south-central rie (north of the plateau with the air dungeon entrance).
