Water spikes are those nasty spinning things that chase you around, a type of monster. You need to get them from the rainy island.
While you're there, go back into the place where Dink walked in, not on, the water, and when you come back out, Dink should be walking normal again. This assumes that you installed the patch that redink1 put out.
