Account ideas: Messaging & Uber FAQ
While messing with the news design over the past day, I've thought of a couple new features that would be cool (in my opinion).

  • Messaging
This would be great fun.  Have a lot of fun playing a D-Mod, and want to thank the author?  Message the author.  Want to yell at somebody for posting a stupid comment, but don't want to create a flame war on the comments system?  Message the complaint.  And so on... sort of like an instant messenger for The Dink Network.  Good idea?  The main problem would be when to delete the posts... should they be deleted when recieved, or a after viewed three times, or something else?
  • Uber FAQ
Basically, people submit questions, and they are answered on a Help page.  There could be categories (original game, d-mods, crashing, bugs, etc.)  Not sure if it would be worth it (or if anybody would have time to answer the questions).
Re: Uber FAQ
I like that Uber FAQ idea. Ideally it would be sorted by d-mod as well as the order catagories you mentioned, could you make it so a new FAQ page would be added automatically for each d-mod in the database?

I think that, if there is enough space on the server, then the user should delete them when they choose to do so. If there's not enough space, then allow the member to have a certain amount of space (similar to what web-based email providers do) to keep messages in, so they're more likely to delete junk sooner.

For my stance on the FAQ, you can refer to ODD's post. I have similar opinions on that matter.

The main problem is not the space (we get unlimited after all) but the size of the database.  The bigger it gets, the slower it is.  And if people send a lot of messages per day, it could get real slow real fast.

Hrm, thats pretty good, allowing people a certain amount of space.  I don't think that people will be sending obscene amounts out anyway, and if one person becomes an issue, you could have a talk with them.

Oh and redink, i like the reviews awaiting to be validated, and i like the syle you did that page in better than the other two, with the post listed without the scrollbar, then you select it and click 'modify' if you want to change it.  I think the other two should be like that two, it would look nicer.

And have you figured out that having to log in twice to the reviews yet?

PS I'll be sending my icon in to you in a couple of mins also

Perhaps I'm just sleepy, but I can't make sense of that paragraph about the style of the reviews.

As for logging in twice, I did make it so you can save your username/password for each area, so you don't need to type it in at all.

Ya I noticed that, thats cool.

Basicaly, the new one you did is designed differently than the 'rejected' and 'accepted', and i think you should base those two off of it.

Ok, upon going back, I now see the 'accepted' page as I liked the 'waiting' page, so maybe they are all the same and it was my imagination...but i don't have a 'waiting' or 'rejected' review right now...but i think its alright

Oh, I get it now.  If only one record is available (such as you have one record awaiting validation) then it will automatically go into edit mode (where the review is in a text box).  Otherwise it lists them all and you can choose which to edit.

Ah!  That is sly, i like it!

Re: Account ideas: Messaging & Uber FAQ
i have seen sites with messagers built in. one i really liked had a pop up window with all the member names of other people, and while you have the window open you can message them and they can message you.

Yes messaging is a good idea, it would be nice to be able to communicate with just one person.  Maybe if it prompted you when you first loaded the site (assuming you chose 'remember me') then people would recieve their messages faster.  Its a good idea, and it can be done.

About the help...it sounds a lot like what this forum really is... I mean, people come here for help on dmods, writing and playing...Plus with the new messaging system you could message the author for help, so i don't think its really needed.

Hey, that reminds me, will the "stay logged in" feature soon be working for all of the parts of the site?
