how do i get past the fire to mandrake in the land of reverence. i talked to the student, but can't remember what he said, and he doesn't show up anymore.

You need to talk to the glowing well in that forest...

You can equip the fast herb boot and run really fast to pass the fire and reach Mandrake, if you don't hesitate and lucky... No, I'm kidding. :p
You need to equip (or just in possesion?) the key for entering the backdoor of the church and talk (or hit, I forgot) to the glowing well. Eventually the well would give you a great armour.
