As I write this, 3ddownloads is having another of its tantrums, and won't even allow anyone to access the site at all. Before this outage occured, I decided to go searching for a new (free) downloads server. After a couple hours of broken promises (one in particular promises unlimited space, but only gives you 60 MB), I found what appeared to be a good one. 100 MB, and everything. Now, I didn't want to be one of those jerks who steal bandwidth from the web space provider (by directly linking the file so they don't get any banner ads at all), so I devised a little cgi script that would display their add along with a link to the file. I uploaded pretty much every new file since September up to the mirror, and linked everything, and it seemed to go fine. I was only taking up about 15 MB or so out of my 100 MB. Well, I just logged in to possible upload more files, and the fricken thing deleted every single large file off of the server (seemingly everything over a couple hundred kilobyes). Dangit. So off to find a better mirror...
Speaking of which, NEVER SEND ATTACHMENTS TO REDINK1@HOTMAIL.COM. Never ever ever ever send attachments there. Small ones are fine (< 100 KB)... but large ones (such as Tyrisis's AGAE Patch 2) are not. Yeah, ~500 KB is small... except when my hotmail box is only 2048 KB and they will actually not deliver mail to me when it fills up.
Also... I've noticed a couple annoying habits on the board... mainly this thread and these threads: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6). They both deal with an unreasonable amount of impatience. The first one had somebody pose a question at 3:00 in the morning (my time), asking a question, and eventually getting upset because nobody was responding within an hour. WTF! The second was somebody continually posting new threads all for the same D-Mod... some for the same problem, all within an hour. Jeez.
And the points system made it debut. Originally, it was just a counter for the number of reviews written (to honor DethLord's huge contribution), but then WC said "What about files?" and so I skewed it to more reflect what files people released. Right now, it is purely based on quantity and category. It doesn't matter if its the worst D-Mod in the world... if its in the same category as the best D-Mod, they both get the same amount of points. Eventually, if every file (or near every file) is reviewed, I may also factor in the average review score. But because a substantial amount of files aren't reviewed, I didn't feel comfortable doing that just yet.
Oh, and I just realized something the other day. I could (pretty much) kill the Dink Smallwood community in a couple minutes if I wanted too. Delete all the files from the 3ddownloads server, wipe Telefragged clean, and boom. No more message board, no more news, no more files... even my death couldn't bring about such a downfall... Dukie has all the passwords, and maybe he and WC could figure out the mess I've made with the internal workings of the site. At least they would still be able to upload files, update news, and so on. Even if Telefragged went under, and deleted the site without warning, it would still survive (I do have several backups). The only way it could die is if I intentionally killed it (either that, or killer space bananas blow up all the computers in the world). Interesting.
