Noticed bugs

Before...

I'll be posting noticed bugs here as I will proceed with the game, the ones so far:
1. Already known issue with DinkHD, tried different settings but nothing unfreezes that scene, on FreeDink works fine;
2. After you talk to the guard in Stonebrook for the first time and Chealse when she comes in if you leave this screen and re-enter it from any side Chealse will appear again, but the birthday party dialogue will start;
3. After talking to the bug and snake if you choose to move to the screen with ducks after removing the ear Dink will notice that probably they are talking about him, but no matter if you will try to put on the 3rd ear or not you cannot get out of that scene, you're stuck there with Dink constantly wondering what the ducks are saying.

Okay...I'll look into #2 and #3. It would help if you could make available some save[#].dat files that show examples of these two issues as you did once before. I never had those problems when I was testing, so I'm not sure how to reproduce them at present.

TIA

I did? Hmm... I really don't remember what was I doing few years ago when I was here last time.

But sure.

By the way:

4. After I talked to Martridge for the first time and opened all the chests the screen stayed locked. Also Martridge asks why 4 of the chests are open while I was only able to open 3 of them.

Unfortunately this bug is game breaking since it happens for the 4th time in a row making it impossible for me to proceed with the game.

UPDATE:

I dealt with this problem by transferring the save file to DinkHD where I could use the ghost mode to get out of it. In addidtion to one experiment performed:

Bug #

5. If you open 2 chests, then leave the screen, then open the remaining 2 ones Martridge won't appear at all.

EDITED:

Could you PM me with your address or send me an e-mail? I would be able to send you the save files and some screenshots.

Hmmm. Sorry, I just realized I was confusing you with Angler. I assumed that I was hearing from him again when I started reading your post. It was Angler that used Google Drive to make available to me some of his save game files to help in testing and patching "Before..." in recent weeks. Anyone can set up a free google drive and make files they upload there shareable to all who wish to download them. (For example, I uploaded a ANBERNIC_game_console_with_dink.jpg file to my Google Drive for my "ANBERNIC game console (from China)" thread.)

Hmmm. So it seems that issue #5 is really a workaround that you used to get past the problem. Okay. BTW, if you look at Angler's "Zippo does not work?" thread, you can see that I think that the 1.04 version of "Before..." should contain a fix for issue #4. I uploaded my 1.04 version a few days ago on Halloween. Unfortunately, the folks who are able to make uploaded dmods available for download here on the Dink Network have not yet made the 1.04 version available.

Anyway, I'll do my best to look into issues #2 & #3 and prepare a 1.05 version once I think I have those bugs addressed.

Here are the results of my work on patching issues #2 and #3:

2. After you talk to the guard in Stonebrook for the first time and Chealse when she comes in if you leave this screen and re-enter it from any side Chealse will appear again, but the birthday party dialogue will start;
Okay, so I added code to the 1.05 version to address this bug and I tested it. So, I think that is fixed.

First of all, you should not be able to "remove the ear" after Dink uses it near the garden with the bug and the snake. There should be no other magic item for Dink to swap it with in his inventory at that time. That being said, I found that I could get Dink stuck in a loop (involving the attempted use of the third ear) at the duckpond when he had just returned from the garden IF Dink never used the third ear in the garden area in the first place and instead slew the snake and bug that were in the garden area. I tried a number of changes to try to avoid this infinite loop and finally gave up trying to coerce the Dink engine to my will. Instead, I added code that forced Dink to put the ear on when he came from the garden to the duck pond area. It is necessary for the plot at this point that Dink talks to the ducks anyway.

I have (just now) uploaded the 1.05 version of this dmod, with the above fixes in place. Can ANYONE tell me how to get this version made available for download? I've already tried sending email to redink1 (or someone else who can make dmods available for downloads) for the 1.04 version (that I uploaded over a week ago).

Wow, fast fixes!
Did you try to send him an e-mail or only a PM? PMs can be easily missed or ignored, for example you did not answer mine regarding the Iron Ring dmod <cough, cough> I actually already finished this game already and I'm thinking about a review.

I noticed that sometimes things take some time, for example I waited about a week for my review to be updated.

So you cannot upload a file directly to the website?

EDITED:

Oh, by the way:

6th bug: if you enter the life saver menu, but decide you won't use it at the moment 1 ability to use it will be deducted from the total 7 anyway. And at the moment you even receive this item you are being told that there is a total of 0 uses of it.

Wow, fast fixes!

Thank you for your kind words.

Did you try to send him an e-mail or only a PM? PMs can be easily missed or ignored, for example you did not answer mine regarding the Iron Ring dmod <cough, cough> I actually already finished this game already and I'm thinking about a review.

Well, given that your message came in on Nov. 7th for "THE LAST QUEST (part 2): The Iron Ring of Destiny 1.10a", I'd say the fact that I put off answering it until two days later isn't that long to wait.

I noticed that sometimes things take some time, for example I waited about a week for my review to be updated.

So you cannot upload a file directly to the website?

No, a developer can only upload and wait for the dmod to be "put into place" by the "webmaster".

EDITED:

Oh, by the way:

6th bug: if you enter the life saver menu, but decide you won't use it at the moment 1 ability to use it will be deducted from the total 7 anyway.

I'm unable to reproduce that issue.

And at the moment you even receive this item you are being told that there is a total of 0 uses of it.

Ah, I know why that happened. I can fix that. I'll put that fix in the next release.

Thanks for bringing these to my attention.

Not necessarily a bug, but a general suggestion for the future projects you make. There is one thing that I absolutely hate in all of your dmods so far except the first part of the last quest: tons of messages when I am in the middle of the fight. An example: I am near the fire shrine, a scorpion attacked me (why to put a scorpion with a screen lock here?) and I got seriously poisoned. What does Dink do when I urgently need to use the anti-venom kit? Is thinking loudly that there is something that he should do here... and when I finally space out those messages and use the kit (another 4 messages to space out) Dink is almost dead. The other super-annoying thing is when Dink is being attacked by scorpions/pillbugs etc. and after stepping on a food he is thinking whether he should eat it or not? It only makes me avoid not only the enemies but also all types of food on the ground because all of them are making me freeze, but still take damage at the same time. I don't want to eat any food during the fight, I just want to be able to continue the fight without being disturbed!

After spending some time on the desert I get an impression that this area simply puts too much rush on the player making it impossible to actually enjoy the exploration of the game. I always like to check all the areas when I am playing, find all secrets and your dmod makes it impossible. Even if I use a kerchief and dropping all the gold Dink is still constantly losing health no matter if you change the area or not. So as I said you are in a constant rush: run (to proceed for as long distance as possible) - fight - avoid food - get hit - manage health - use anti-venom kit (4 times space pressed) - fight - run - run - run... AAARGH! Even according to Bear Grylls surviving on a desert isn't THAT hard. Or rather annoying.

And if you add the absolute lack of the save bots and limited amount of saves you can use...

To separate it from the previous remarks:

7th bug or rather a series of similar bugs. Try to re-check the caves and other entrances, I once was not able to enter a cave behind the snake after Apollo revived me and few times when I entered one of those square entrances on the ground (the maze area) Dink did not appear inside and the game was just freezing even without being able to enter the game menu.

#1 Request to not have to worry about picking up food during a fight.
Well, to me, this was just a challenge that made the game more interesting. I always thought that there are times when Dink might need to pick up food during a fight to stay alive and times when he is better off avoiding it. Perhaps I can make it an [E]scape menu option to toggle on or off picking up food while monsters are on screen in future games.

#2 Request to not take a long time[4 messages to space out] to use the anti-venom kit. I decided that using the anti-venom kit should not be a quick process because in real life, it would not be a quick process. Depending on the type of poison involved, it is actually pretty dangerous to try fumbling with one of these kits when you need it. Trust me, I know. Anyway, I thought that this would (again) make the game a bit more challenging. I'll think a bit about whether I should change this though.

#3 Request to reduce the danger-to-health level of crossing the desert.
Did you dampen the kerchief? Did you only cross the desert in the evening?

So, now there are three possible changes I may put into the next release of the "Before..." dmod. Like I say, I'll think about implementing these. Perhaps I'll put all these together on one single [E]scape menu option to toggle on or off these more challenging aspects of the game all at once, so you can play in easy or hard mode. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hmmm. So far I cannot reproduce this issue. Does it happen all the time or just some of the time? Does it only happen when you are "rushing" as you mention above and might jump right from one thing quickly to the next? I know that sometimes timing can be a general problem with the use of the Dink engine.

Starting with the bug:

1. The one with the snake cave happened only once when I was brought back to life by Apollo, I was approaching it in different ways and nothing worked;
2. As for the desert entrance bug - related to the entrance 2 screens below the one where you find the lighter - today I noticed something important: if you approach the entrance from above and don't release the down arrow button in time for a short moment you will see Dink appearing just above the entrance, then he will disappear going down and either the game will get stuck on the current screen without transition to related one, or it will freeze on the exit screen. The game just gets dumb in such a situation and cannot handle it. Not sure if it is not a problem with the Dink engine itself.

As for the suggestions:

1. Food: since I already noticed you are able to make really advanced menus maybe you could create an options menu for this with the following to choose:

What to do with the food when you approach it?

a) pick it and store in the backpack if possible (excluding meat);
b) eat it;
c) leave it on the ground;
d) every time ask the player what to do.

2. The venom kit etc. - no no, you got that wrong, I was not irritated just because of that. I mean it is actually good, because indeed it is realistic. You really need some time to do it, so the time must pass. I wouldn't change that. What I meant is that you should avoid situations when - like in the one I described - there is a direct threat to Dink and instead of fighting/healing himself he is wondering what to do with a shrine? Now that is not realistic. Who cares about a shrine if you may just not even be able to reach it? Since a shrine is visible from only one side the "loud thinking" cannot be avoided, so the only thing to do would be removing that scorpion since it doesn't serve any significant purpose here.

3. About wandering around the desert: yes, I found and put the kerchief on Dink's face and I am even using that advanced feature (well done!) to drop gold at sight and obviously after I rest under the rock at the very beginning I am moving only at night. As for making it realistic, since you are not losing health on a desert just like that: maybe Dink could find an empty bottle or something like that and would have to store water in it whenever possible and a "dehydration meter" would be added and when Dink would be getting dehydrated his health would start to deplete?

A personal opinion: your dmod's are indeed different in a challenging way, especially Before..., because in this game you are not guaranteed to succeed and you can actually screw up and not be able to finish the game at all, so planning ahead is required. Partially the same was about the Last quest, part 1 where before proceeding I spent some time drawing a complete map of the cave.

Phew! That was long!

Nope.

I can't understand why you don't see them. I used the same browser to make the same type of upload for dmods the same way I have always done it using the https://www.dinknetwork.com/contribute/file/new/ web page.

Sigh... anyway... if you can't find them then... well, just wait a while. I should be uploading the 2.0x version of "Before..." some time after Herbie finally stops posting bug descriptions here and I come up with a new version that will address most of those issues. When that happens, I'll mention it here in this discussion thread. Alternatively, if there is some other way I can make the 2.0 version available for posting on this website, then let me know.

BTW, the .dmod file might be too big an email message.

But, thanks anyway for checking to see if you could post the new version(s) for me. I'll check the https://www.dinknetwork.com/file/before/ location every day I visit the Dink Network to see if they get posted.

Starting with the bug:

1. The one with the snake cave happened only once when I was brought back to life by Apollo, I was approaching it in different ways and nothing worked;

Hmmm. Thanks for the effort to describe this in greater detail. I'm afraid I still cannot reproduce it or otherwise figure what is causing the problem.

Okay, I was able to reproduce this one and took some steps to address it. This problem should not happen again for this screen "entrance 2 screens below the one where you find the lighter". But in general, once you are in transition to another screen, it is a good idea to stop pressing arrow keys until you see what happens next.

As for the suggestions:

1. Food: since I already noticed you are able to make really advanced menus maybe you could create an options menu for this with the following to choose:

What to do with the food when you approach it?

a) pick it and store in the backpack if possible (excluding meat);
b) eat it;
c) leave it on the ground;
d) every time ask the player what to do.

Okay, I just made the ability to NOT pick up food when monsters are on screen a part of easy mode. Sigh... I'm trying to keep things simple here (for reasons I explain below when talking about variables).

Since a shrine is visible from only one side the "loud thinking" cannot be avoided, so the only thing to do would be removing that scorpion since it doesn't serve any significant purpose here.

Okay, I moved the scorpion that was in the rear of the shrine and deleted two others. Hmmmm, I admit that I thought you were complaining about "The venom kit etc.", so I went ahead and made a change that made a quicker version of it part of "easy mode" for those that are too challenged by it (even if that group does not include you since you admit you like it "because indeed it is realistic").

One of the things I have to be careful with in working on this dmod is to be sure to NOT create too many more variables. During game development I had to rewrite things several times to avoid running "out of the 248 available slots for variables". So, I think I'll pass on that elaborate (but fun sounding) idea to have Dink "find an empty bottle or something" and then implement a "dehydration meter" and a juggle a new factor in his health. Don't forget that there is quite a lot of code and a few variables in use now to manage Dink's poison status already. Maybe I could do something like this in a future dmod though. But, it was straight forward enough (and required no new variables) to implement a less dangerous desert to cross as a part of easy mode.

I'm so very pleased to know that you are enjoying my dmods and the somewhat unique challenges they offer! Thanks for mentioning that.

Phew! That was long!

Well, I've added a lot of code and made a few changes to things for my 2.0 version of this dmod. But, I won't upload it just yet.

You might want to know that it seems to me that you may have missed an important survival item that would help you get water at several locations while in the desert. Like some other items, it is found near a skeleton, in this case near the cliff's edge of the Eastern High Desert.

BTW, how far have you gotten in playing "Before..."?

Oh sh... so I forgot to take that canteen again after initially checking the area. Yet still I would have to find a cork for it

Now that you reminded me of that I will want to find that cork! I am also curious if there is a way to get down to that area with an opened chest and an entrance that is below the surrounding sand.

On my furthest save I am trying to figure out how to get to and use the shrine and how to pass the fire barrier, so after this the road to the pyramid will be open for me.

I think you need to read the "* * * Safe Water" paragraph in my walkthru.txt file in the before directory. You may benefit from reading other paragraphs too, such as the one titled "* * * Pocket Knife".

I am also curious if there is a way to get down to that area with an opened chest and an entrance that is below the surrounding sand.

I don't understand what you are talking about. I can't recall any areas that start out with an already opened chest in them.

On my furthest save I am trying to figure out how to get to and use the shrine and how to pass the fire barrier, so after this the road to the pyramid will be open for me.

I think you also need to read the "* * * To the fire shrine" paragraph and (perhaps more importantly) the "* * * To get past the test of fire" paragraph in my walkthru.txt file in the before directory.

Well, I admit that I'm trying to get to the point where all your bug reports are in so I can release one version with all of them in it instead of one version every few days. And walthrough guides.

Whoa, are you trying to... make me rush B?

But... the game is finished! The only thing I took a look in the walkthrough was the fact that the cork is located in the Oasis, nuff said

Ok, now where was I with the bugs numeration? Yep, there are more You know, in the meantime when I was not here for few years I was a tester and a beta tester of few games, so some habits just stayed with me.

Ah yes!

8. Probably related to 6: when I was in the chamber with the coffin I decided to save the game and - despite I used that ability once at the very beginning, near the stone that Dink was resting under, once in the Oasis and once in the mine - I've been told that I still got 6 uses and it was after I saved my game, so something is definitely wrong here.

9. When Dink is about to leave after using the stone he says "Take me back take me back...", intended?

10. When I tried to go back, but without the Scarab and I went upwards through the entrance I mentioned earlier (game freeze bug you took care of) Dink disappeared and I was only seeing his voice talking something about some... planks?

11. Two screens for you: a hardness bug and a problem with the design of the map: if you leave the screen with the pyramid through the top right part of the screen Dink gets stuck in a rock. Overall the desert map is not that polished as the jungle in Last Quest Part 2.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1216C8DIpEMHX2rLaYNEU6h1O_nIIHWRH
https://drive.google.com/open?id=11ihfXaG41PmGv0OE2sjIjBLvqIrIg72s

Generally if you memorize the whole map the game actually becomes easy, even with the damage taken while walking through the desert. I never used the revival offered by Apollo or smelled the flowers, even forgot about having them. Not sure what I could use other 2 bombs for.

Nevertheless you can make final fixes and upload the 2.0 version - as soon as you hopefully will deal with the problems you are experiencing.

But don't go far! Next dmod: Glitters! MWAHAHAHA!

I'm not sure how this is happening. In fact, it is hard for me to figure out how it is possible, but I made a change to try to prevent it from happening again.

10. When Dink is about to leave after using the stone he says "Take me back take me back...", intended?

Well, yes, it was intended. But I added some needed punctuation to make it more clear what is happening.

11. When I tried to go back, but without the Scarab and I went upwards through the entrance I mentioned earlier

The ripplestone should prevent Dink from going back if he does not have the Scarab, and Dink even realizes that (thinks about it on screen) if he attempts to do that. I'm not sure what you are talking about here.

(game freeze bug you took care of) Dink disappeared and I was only seeing his voice talking something about some... planks?

So, Dink "went upwards" (go north one screen?) when the ripplestone did not take him to his preferred destination and then he mentioned planks? This is puzzling, I must say. Dink mentions planks in several places, all in the Western High Desert near some planks, ONLY IF he "attacks" those planks. So, I have no idea how to reproduce this issue or even any way to guess what happened.

12. Two screens for you: a hardness bug and a problem with the design of the map: if you leave the screen with the pyramid through the top right part of the screen Dink gets stuck in a rock.

Okay, I added a few more rocks and some additional hardness to the area near where you attempted to "leave the screen with the pyramid through the top right part of the screen" (the 1st screen in your list below).

Overall the desert map is not that polished as the jungle in Last Quest Part 3.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=12ihfXaG41PmGv0OE2sjIjBLvqIrIg72s

The 2nd screen in the list above seems to be the one that is 1 screen north of the screen where Dink finds a grave and a stone to rest under until evening. I was not sure what exactly you found troublesome here, but I tried to expand certain hardness areas.

Generally if you memorize the whole map the game actually becomes easy, even with the damage taken while walking through the desert. I never used the revival offered by Apollo or smelled the flowers, even forgot about having them. Not sure what I could use other 3 bombs for.

So then these complaints:
[
I always like to check all the areas when I am playing, find all secrets and your dmod makes it impossible. Even if I use a kerchief and dropping all the gold Dink is still constantly losing health no matter if you change the area or not. So as I said you are in a constant rush: run (to proceed for as long distance as possible) - fight - avoid food - get hit - manage health - use anti-venom kit (5 times space pressed) - fight - run - run - run... AAARGH! Even according to Bear Grylls surviving on a desert isn't THAT hard. Or rather annoying.
]
about the ability to survive in the desert were not necessary after all? You never used Apollo's help or sniffed the magic flowers? You should have mentioned that before.

Nevertheless you can make final fixes and upload the 2.0 version - as soon as you hopefully will deal with the problems you are experiencing.

I'm not sure when I will upload the 2.0 version, but I'll mention it here when I do.

But don't go far! Next dmod: Glitters! MWAHAHAHA!

Okay, I check into the Dink Network at least once a week. Just be sure to separate those comments from these and put them into the "File Discussion" section for "All that Glitters!".

Try again upload new version first. Then try on a different browser maybe.
You can send it to me and I'll try to hack uploading it under your name. If all else fails you'll need to contact redink1 probably. Good luck

Well, just to be 100% clear about what I did a few minutes ago... here is what took place.

I logged in and went to... https://www.dinknetwork.com/contribute/ .
I clicked on [New File].
I entered Title of "Before...".
I set Version to "v2.00".
I entered a description of the changes for this version.
I selected D-mod as a Category.
I chose the file to upload as "before-v2_00.dmod" (loaded from my local ~/tmp directory on my Linux box).
I typed [Please replace the existing version of the "Before..." dmod with this module as soon as is convenient.] as the Instructions.
I clicked the [Submit] button and watched the "Uploading (%0)..." message at the bottom of my web browser window reach "Uploading (100%)" while noting that a monitor I have running (iftop) was telling me of the bytes being uploaded to the DN.
I left that Contribute web page open in a tab on my browser for as long as it took me to type up this message.

Do you have any idea of how I can reach him? I have been unable to do so for some time.

Good luck

Thanks! I look forward to hearing how things went.

The only thing I took a look in the walkthrough was the fact that the cork is located in the Oasis, nuff said

I see. Some of your earlier remarks gave me a different impression.

I mean that after your suggestion I only noticed that the solution was located on the Oasis and that was just enough.

So then these complaints:

Well, the game sometimes seems more difficult than it really is until you master it. If you memorize what monsters drop what healing items you can even survive on a desert without saving at all. As for Apollo and flowers: I treated them as a help if you want to through the game going the easy way. If the game is well-balanced - and this one is - then those additional items are not required.

No worries, I know how the forums work In fact I already found few things, would you prefer to have the list attached to the existing thread that you created or would it be better if I created a new one?

Oh, I saw your post elsewhere about your latest work. I would not be able to help you with coding since I simply don't speak DinkC, but if you would need some help in bugs finding and functionality testing - let me know.

Please create a new thread for any "All that Glitters!" issues you come up with. Put those bugs into a new thread in the "File Discussion" section for "All that Glitters!"

I'd be pleased to have you assist in testing the beta release of "Crowns of Stone". I'll probably make the beta release available on Google Drive sometime in the coming weeks. Thanks for volunteering.

Perhaps not working because you're uploading a new file (ie, entirely new D-Mod) with the same name as an existing one.

Use new version, not new file, see if that works. Here!

If not, send it to me, I've just discovered I can easily add versions to any file, no silly hacks needed, duh.

Okay. Well, I feel a little silly about having used the menus improperly, but I will still be grateful if using the "New Version" mode means that the upload "works" this time. The "Your version was added successfully, and it will be reviewed by a staff member soon." message that followed my upload certainly looked encouraging.

If not, send it to me, I've just discovered I can easily add versions to any file, no silly hacks needed, duh.

Okay, I don't think my internet service provider will tolerate me sending the (large file) dmod in email. If the above effort did fail, then I'll make it available to you on Google Drive.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

I'll sort it this evening, can't right now.
