Bow Graphics
I've been busy making graphics of Nadine with a bow for Day of the Carcass. So far I've finished the frames for shooting to the west. Please let me know what you think about it.

EDIT: I'll probably change the shadow later if there's nothing wrong with it so far.

You have done a great job with this Erwin, a small suggestion which you can ignore if you like... I would make the hand thicker than the arm (which seems a little long maybe due to the bow being a large one...) and show some of the right arm as it is supposed to be holding the arrow... something like this maybe
Suggestion... But all in all a good job

MsDink's is the exact same thing! Only it's not a GIF file.
Its all Erwins work, I merely adjusted the arms
Yeah, but the arms look better now. The other one's was too thin.
Wow that's really cool, what program(s) did you use to edit the sprite?
That looks really good. Completely blends into the game's style. Well done, Erwin.

The hand is already a bit thicker than the arm but it's barely visible because it's holding the bow. The arm should have the right size since I cut it out from frame C6-W1-02 of the brown maiden. The right arm is mostly hidden by her body and the white part of her dress.
Thanks for your suggestion but I'll ignore most of it because of the following things.
In your image the hand seems to be positioned differently. I want the bow to be held like this. Notice how the wrist is positioned lower than the hand so the hand sticks out above the arm and not below it.
I could perhaps make the arm thicker but it should have the right size.
There are a couple of things wrong with the right arm in your image. The arm is positioned too high so the hand wouldn't be holding the bow string where it should. The right arm is also sticking out too much. The only way that it could stick out that much is when her right arm would be longer than her left arm. Remember how part of her dress covers her arm, if she was wearing something else you'd see a bigger part of the right arm sticking out.

Paint and Paint Shop Pro.

the first one is perfect
other than the shadow
now dont mess with perfection

These do look pretty good actually. I think I'll finally download this game now.
I've finished the frames for shooting east. (It doesn't have the shadow and the quiver yet.) Let me know what you think.

I'll probably ask about your opinion with every direction I finish. I've got to make sure I do it right, right?

Maybe a little bit of fix on the right elbow on this one and then it's awesome. The south and east ones are gonna be a lot of work.
I've started working on the walking animation. Here's what I have so far (without quiver and shadow for now).

Personally I don't think they look very good but they're better than no new walking animation at all I think. Let me know if you see something that could be improved (I probably won't be able to make it a lot better though).
I expect to have the rest of the animations finished soon (within two weeks).

I think that's very good in fact.
That's good to hear. I guess I'm just a perfectionist

This reminds me, did you improve the elbow of that previous picture?

I actually forgot to ask you about that and I haven't improved it yet. What kind of fix did you have in mind? You didn't mention what was wrong with it.

I'm not sure what you meant to say there since the east one is already done. Or weren’t you referring to the animation for shooting towards the east?

Umm... I probably meant south and north.
And the elbow looks like it's placed too up. It looks like the arm isn't coming out from the sleeve but above it.

I think I didn't show enough of the upper arm (the part that's coming out of the sleeve). The upper arm is barely visible since it's partially covered by the lower arm and it's probably just too small.
I'll see what I can do to make it show where the arm is actually coming from.
EDIT: I think the problem is the sleeve since it covers up a bit of the upper arm. Showing more of the upper arm doesn't improve much now, I'll try to turn the sleeve a bit more towards the arm instead.

I've changed the sleeve of the last frame a bit. Does it look any better? Link
It looks like a pretty natural bow stance to me. The arm is always held in a 90 degree angle for shooting a bow straight ahead.
it looks like she is pointing her arm upward
and then bending it to hold the arrow
THAT IS NOT NATURAL IT IS WEIRD

for the downward walking
i thing the bow should look like it is pointing forward
just some advice

Are you trying to say that you don't have any joints? It's perfectly natural to be able to bend and straigten your arm.

For some reason, now that I look at it... it DOES look better.
I couldn't see what was wrong with the first one, but this one is not worse.

Are you just trying to avoid having to say anything else in this thread by admitting that it looks better? Or did you just not look closely enough? (We're just talking about a difference of a couple of pixels here, I just can't blame you if you couldn't even make out what it was. Now that I think about it I remember that I couldn't even make out what some things were in the original game.)
I've removed the sleeve from her right arm here and enlarged it so you can decide properly if it looks good or not.

i m lower the whole arm a bit it should look evean better

No, it's supposed to be that high.
No, it's supposed to be that high.
Making her upper arm thicker would help, if I'm currently not on weed and thinking absurdly.

Good point. I'll continue working on the walking animations.

Well, whether you're working this for now or not... The picture looks better zoomed than normal. Somehow you should get the upper arm to show more.
Sorry to agree but it really needs both her arms to be a bit thicker. Good job though it's coming on nicely!
Honestly though, who cares? It's not like you'll be scrutinizing it like that while playing, you'd just be impressed it's actually been made instead Keep up the good work, I'd like to see the finished product^^
No, actually the first thing I would say is "Hey hey hey hey HEY!! The bow graphic, although I haven't seen it yet... looks wrong! Ok, that's it. 0.0. scores for this one!!"
Sorry to agree but it really needs both her arms to be a bit thicker.
What makes you think that? Does it just look like the arms should be thicker or did you compare the arms to the size of other sprites and noticed that an arm shouldn't be that thin?
Does This look better then? I think she looks a bit beefy now.
I also kind of agree with Kyle but changing the size of the arms is probably something that is actually noticeable.

Hmmm... I don't know how to explain what I'm thinking here.
You know those eye test paintings, where others see one things and others see completely another? This picture kind of creates same kind of optical illusion for some people who see things different than others. For example, I don't see the upper arm at all, while you and Kyle apparently do. I just see an arm (starting from elbow) floating next to the girl. Yeah, I know that was badly described but oh well.
Do whatever you wish, but I think if you made the elbow start from the sleeve, it would look much better to my eyes.

Its just my eye, it "looks" too thin. When the sprite is small the arms looked like sticks. Its your call but I think the change is close to perfect Erwin - exactly what I meant - her arms are now thicker than the arrow *claps* Looks awesome and you have done a great job. (I do think you are right though and the arms would have mattered although some other things don't)I think it is the length from the bow that made them look thinner than they actually are and I do see what Skull means, but it is ok as it is (JMHO).
I think it was fine the way it was.
But! If you just change the pixel at 24,31 to a slightly lighter shade of pink, it would be perfect.

Dont be a "donkey" Sparrow
me "changes" Sparrows pixels!
... To a slightly darker shade of brown ... ... to match his arms! Stirrer.

It's all too small to make it look perfect I think, so I'll just move on with the rest. If you think something is missing just imagine it is there.
her arms are now thicker than the arrow
I think the arrows in Dink are way too thick if compared with other sprites. Take 3 or 4 times the thickness of an arrow in Dink and you'd be able to hide a head behind it. In reality you'd need a lot more arrows for that.
I take it ok is good enough

I agree the arrows are way too thick, you need to have 'beefed up' heaps to fire one of those puppies off and it is something I notice when playing, but - methinks the point here was - when you look at her body (fat wee tart) then her anorexic arms - that's what we were trying to help you with, its visual perception and you do notice things like that at a glance - so yeah its way better now.
Nowww if we could just tweak ........ Muhahaha!!

How about I send the frames to you and you tweak them
Haha thought you would like me to just "shove them" somewhere special
They're awesome
Since you're so good with editing Dink sprites, any chance you could do some kind of graphical utility to replace the item in Dink's hand? Like having another graphic instead of the sword, like the axe in the Weapon's Pack.

Pretty awesome, though I think there should be a bit of a rendering fix there while your at adding a bow to her. Just a suggestion.

I can replace the item in Dink's hand. Removing the weapon from Dink's hand is easy and so is placing another one in it. The problem is that I need weapon animations for attack idle and walk. Those can be made with a 3D model of a weapon but modelling and animating takes quite some time (I‘m also not very experienced with 3D programs).
I played around a bit with a pickaxe for Dink some time ago. (It‘s just an example so it‘s not that great just yet.) I learned that creating new weapons for Dink is doable but that it takes a lot of time. Time I'd rather spend on scripting.

A rendering fix? What exactly needs fixing?
